Slot Technician teaches you how slots work

Tech4Truth Episode 4 - The Spice of Life

Hello once again. Mark Vincent the certified slot technician here to talk about the different types of slot machines, how theyíre different from each other, and how to play them to ensure youíre not hurting your chances. In my last video, we learned that slot machine paybacks can be controlled by the casino, that paybacks can vary wildly, and that higher denominations usually have higher paybacks.

When choosing a slot machine, the denomination is going to play the biggest role in the percentage you get, so start your choice with that. How much are you comfortable playing? If you donít feel comfortable playing a dollar a spin, or if five dollars a spin makes your stomach turn, then you shouldnít play those games even if they have slightly better odds. Above all gambling should be fun, since youíre never going to get rich doing it. In any case, once youíve found the denomination you want to play, you still have several choices as to the type of game.

Iím going to talk here a bit about hit frequency, which is different than payback. Payback is how much MONEY the machine pays back over time, and hit frequency is how often the machine hits a winning combination. Theyíre related, but they arenít the same. My book goes into a lot more detail then I can here about hit frequency and how hit frequency is affected by certain machine types, but the important thing is that itís simply how often a winning combination comes up on the reels.

YThe simplest game type, and what used to be the most common, is a standard multiplier. Multipliers are simple because the only thing that changes when you bet more credits is how much you get paid back should you win. Games like Double Diamond and Five Times Pay are multipliers. If you bet one credit and get bars, for example, youíll win $10. Bet two credits and win $20. Bet three credits and win $30. The more you bet, the more you winÖ simple. Betting more doesnít increase your hit frequency on these games, so itís fine to bet less than max. If youíre just starting out, these are probably the best way to get your feet wet.

Multi-Line games are currently the most popular slot machines in the casino, and almost all video games, except for poker, are multi-line games. Youíll know a multi line game because you can bet on multiple lines. A standard multiplier only allows you to bet on the centerline, but multi-line games allow you to bet on the centerline, plus the top and bottom lines, plus the diagonal lines, plus just about any line in between on some games. They usually have 9 lines, but I have seen as high as 500 lines on some slots. The key to a multi-line game is to always bet all the lines. You donít need to bet the max number of credits on the lines, but make sure you bet at least one credit on all the lines. The reason is that the machine doesnít adjust the way it spins based on how many lines you bet, so betting less than all the lines means if a combination comes up on a line you havenít bet, you wonít hit itÖ so your hit frequency goes down. Since your hit frequency goes down, your chances of hitting go down, so your payback percentage also goes down. This is bad, so always bet all the lines. By betting them all, even if you donít bet max, youíre sure to get the highest percentage you can.

The next game type Iíll discuss, and probably the hardest to find and hardest to understand, are Buy-a-Pay games. Buy-a-Pay games donít increase the amount you win the more you bet, but instead they increase the number of combinations that will pay if they hit. The example I always use to show people a Buy-a-Pay game is the Blazing 7ís by Bally. If you can find a Blazing 7ís slot machine, then you know youíre looking at a Buy-a-Pay. In this case, if you only bet one credit, you will win with three bars, but you wonít win with three 7ís. How is it possible not to win with three 7ís? Itís because you didnít BUY that PAY. You have to bet more in order for the 7ís to be a winning combination. Just like multi-line games, your hit frequency and percentage goes down if you get a normally winning combination across a payline but donít get paid for it because you didnít bet the right way, so in order to get the best hit frequency and payback on a Buy-a-Pay, you have to be sure to buy all the pays. This usually means betting max, so I always advise to bet max on all buy-a-pay games just to be sure.

Now Iím going to make a little note here about progressive machines. Progressive games are the games that have a top award that goes up the more the game is played. Progressives usually have odds and percentages that are comparable to regular reel slots, unless the progressive amount is ridiculously high, such as MegaBucks or other very large multi-casino progressives. Since thatís the case, if you can find a progressive that has a high amount and isnít MegaBucks or the others, I would recommend to play it. Make sure to always bet max on progressives. If you donít bet max, then find another game, because betting less than max on a progressive is a complete waste. If you win the top award and donít bet max, you wonít win the progressive. Iíve seen this happen to people dozens of times, so never ever play a progressive without betting max.

The final type of game Iíll talk a little about in this video is Poker. Why only a little? Because Iím devoting a whole video to it next time. Video Poker is almost always going to be the best bet, for slots anyway, in the casino. The highest paybacks are in Video Poker, and the most consistent wins are there too. In my next video Iíll talk about why theyíre your best bet and how you can tell youíre playing the highest payback video poker machine in the casino just by looking at it. Be sure to stick around for that, and Iíll see you next time on Tech4Truth.
